McCarthy’s Newsagents in Youghal will be represented for a remarkable seventh time in this weekend’s edition of Winning Streak on RTE.
Seven people from the East Cork/West Waterford area have purchased lucky tickets at the shop on Tallow Street, which has resulted in them appearing on the famous TV game-show. This Saturday, East Cork will be represented once again, with Youghal’s David O'Brien Jnr one of five contestants on the 10 February programme, which is hosted by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy. Like the other six before him in previous years, David purchased his winning scratch card at McCarthy’s Newsagents. The lucky ticket was subsequently drawn out of the iconic drum on the show last weekend – meaning that he gets to participate in this week’s edition of the show.
To have a shot at appearing on the illustrious TV show, a person has to be over 18 and needs to purchase the official Winning Streak scratch card and, if it reveals three stars, then the card is popped in the post in the official green envelope, before being sent to the National Lottery HQ. Five lucky names are then drawn each Saturday night on RTE.
As well as a whole host of luxurious prizes and attractive amounts of cash up for grabs on the night, one lucky participant will also have the chance to spin the wheel – which carries a top prize of €500,000.
The McCarthy family have been trading in Youghal since 1960. They were one of the original lotto agents in the town. Speaking about the shop’s habit of selling lucky tickets, Liam McCarthy told the East Cork Journal; ‘‘Four of the seven people (who bought winning tickets) live around us in a semi-circle. The other three were from Knockanore, Clashmore and Cork Hill. Obviously, the customers are very lucky. We are delighted for them. Hopefully we will have many more on the show in the future. It’s good to see the customers winning.
‘‘We get a bit of publicity from it and we get to go to Dublin and see how RTE operates. We’re looking forward to the weekend and to supporting David. Hopefully, he’ll spin the wheel and take the top prize home. It would be great for the town, to see a win like that. We wish David the best of luck.’’
Winning-Streak airs on RTE One at 8.35pm on Saturday.
