It’s looking like a weekend of food, fish, glamour and entertainment - and all free thanks to this year's Food & Mackerel Festival. Kicking off on the 11th August and run over three days, the festival has a history of blazing sunshine, free mackerel tastings, food markets, glamorous grannies, live entertainment and amusements.
The Glamorous Grannies is one not to be missed. Chairman of Youghal 4 All, Mr. Jim Flanagan, hails the event as a way to appreciate all that grandmothers do for their families. Set in Barry's Lane, the contest features on stage interviews as well as private functions where the contestants mingle with the judges. "It always has a fantastic atmosphere and the grannies are well supported! It's another unique event in Youghal's calendar!"
All three evenings of the festival have live music in Barry's Lane. Saturday will see mackerel tastings in Barry's Lane, where local restaurants will deliver mackerel tastings like no other. Secretary of Youghal 4 All, Helen Heaphy Grainge, commented that, "Youghal has as much to offer in terms of food and the standard is really high. This festival is all about enhancing Youghal's reputation as a food haven." Other events on the Saturday include line dancing, karaoke, water games, sand art, assault courses and much more.
Sunday sees the Food Market in full swing featuring stalls from all over Cork and Waterford. Social dancing, puppet shows and magic shows for the kids will round off a magic weekend of family fun.
