A ‘Helping Hand for Sand’ at Mall Beach Youghal

by Denise FitzGerald

Dont forget your shovel...Work in progress by Youghal Council to provide sand bags for those who need them.

The work of local Youghal services including East Cork Municipal Office and their outdoor staff, the ESB, Irish Water and the Emergency Services in the town were outstanding over the days of hurricanes and storms.
For those living in the town and low lying areas, any threat of tides is a big problem and Sand Bags are crucial to prevent devastating damage to home, properties and occupants.
In the early hours of Friday morning last Council workers gathered on the Mall Beach to provide the sand and bags for those in danger of floods and The East Cork Journal, just passing by, noticed that there were also 5/6 other local gents helping out in the area. Stopping to take a pic, they modestly explained that they "were just volunteers living in Youghal who came to help fill the bags for those who would find it difficult themselves". Asked to stand into a photograph, they graciously declined saying "It's no big deal really. We just want to help out"!
Great work, everyone. There's still a few of ye left!
