The Active School's Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. It is a flag awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community….which is something we do at Whitegate NS!!
The national curriculum allows for an hour of Physical Education each week for each class. Whitegate NS has
great sporting facilities for our PE lessons. We have a school hall that is suited to indoor activities in poorer weather. We have a large front court and an ample sized playing field to the rear. We also have a running route marked outdoors and access to the People's Path for long walks.
As well as teaching Physical Education lessons in Whitegate we strive to encourage physical activity throughout the day. We take regular activity breaks: for the Run Around Europe programme... where classes strive to "Run" to various cities in Europe. Classes recently reached Dublin, London and Paris. Our school yards are designed to encourage activity at play time and the children particularly love the fact we have so much space on.
both our field and playground.
We have special days that focus on encouraging activity. Ideas vary from year to year but we recenly had a sponsored walk for Kieran O Connot and last week we had an Active Schools Week – including lots of activities throughut the week and whole days dedicated to sports and fun!
Soccer is a large park of life in Whitegate given its proximity to Corkbeg Soccer Club. We are also adjacent to Whitegate Rowing Club which has a solid connection with the school.
Athletics is an important part of the year’s sports programme in Whitegate. The school takes part in the Cork County Primary Sports every year and always with great success! Training takes place in school. We competed in orienteering this term. Michael Cahill teaches Irish Dance in the school and Aghada GAA coach the children throughout the year.
Active School Week
Active School's week was a huge success this year. The whole week was active and fun. We had a visit from Cork Sports Parnership on Monday. On Tuedsay Guileen Coast Guard visited the school to do a lesson on Water Safety. Hurling Superstar Conor Lehane trained children of all classes on Wednesday. We had a massive Easter Egg Hunt for the whole school, a soccer tournament, circuit training, a staff against pupils game and many more activities. Homework assigned for the week was activity based.
All in all it was a huge success and we were blessed with the weather as the children really enjoyed their week outdoors in the sunshine!
