The cold weather did nothing to dampen the welcome of wonder woman, Mary Hickey, as she arrived ahead of time at Youghal Lifeboat Station on Easter Sunday, having run from Ballycotton RNLI. Members of the Athletic and Triathlon Clubs ran with her in a show of support. She was accompanied and monitored throughout this leg by members of the Youghal RNLI and Coastguards. On Saturday, members of the Guileen Coastguard escorted her as she, and members of her local Arklow Rowing Club, rowed across Cork Harbour from Crosshaven to Aghada Pier and, from there, she continued on foot to Ballycotton Station House.
On arrival at the Lifeguard Station in Youghal Mary and her supportive participants and well-wishers were invited in for a warming cup of tea and an array of cakes and sandwiches provided by the Youghal crew. Everyone was in great spirits, despite the weather, and in awe of such a fine lady doing such a tremendous feat in an effort to raise much needed funds for the RNLI. Since setting off on New Year’s Day from Arklow, Mary has raised almost €25,000.
Hennessy Sports generously donated a new pair of sneakers to Mary, and Roseville B&B Youghal very kindly provided the perfect overnight accommodation for Mary to relax in before she faced the next leg of her journey to Helvic on Easter Monday.
East Cork wishes Mary every success in her continuing heroic endeavours to raise awareness and funds for Ireland’s RNLI.
