Photos By Andrea Cunningham

Last Friday 27 September, a series of photographs depicting the Aldi store in Youghal as a former site for the manufacture of carpets for over half a century, was unveiled.
The discount multiple revealed seven framed photographs showing the Carpet Manufacturing process of both Youghal and Couristan Carpets who held a presence at the site from 1954 -2006.
A framed document detailing the history of Carpet Manufacturing in Youghal complements the photos on the entry wall to the Supermarket.
The photographs were donated by former employees of Youghal Carpets, and others were reproduced with the kind permission of Cork County Council.
From 1954 to 1984 Youghal carpets operated out of the building and two years later Couristan Carpets was established maintaining the town’s connection with the carpet industry.
In 2006 almost 100 jobs were lost at the Couristan facility, bringing an end to carpet manufacturing in the Harbour Town for the first time since 1952.
At its height Youghal Carpets employed over 800 full time staff from the entire hinterland of East Cork and West Waterford.
