Cork picked up a badly needed two points when they got the better of Tipperary at Semple Stadium Thurles on Saturday evening. It was anything but a good night for football, with Cork edging the contest for most of the 70 plus minutes.
It took Cork 11 minutes to registrar their opening point from Michael Hurley, while Mark Collins added a second before Luke Connolly had Cork in front in the 16th minute. Connolly was providing most of the Cork scores although Michael Hurley and Paul Kerrigan shot points to help Cork to a 0-8 to 0-4 interval lead with Eoghan Sweeney doing well for the home side. On the resumption both sides traded points in the opening minutes with Connolly having a good night with the boot and at the three-quarter stage the four point gap remained with Cork leading by 0-12 to 0-8 as Tipperary were making very little headway against a Cork defence bolstered by subs Cian Kiely and Sean Powter while Brian Hurley also entered the fray.
Cork continued to do well at midfield with Ian Maguire again playing well. Cork got a big boost five minutes from time when Rurai Deane raised a green flag to leave Cork in front by 1-12 to 0-9 with just five minutes remaining. Tipperary were not going down without a fight as they hit two quick points to close the gap to four once more as the game entered the 4 minutes of additional time. Cork were having to defend for their lives as Tipperary piled on the pressure and another point left just the goal separating the sides. Time however was the enemy for the home side as Cork picked up a badly needed win and a valuable two points that set them up for the remaining two games as they fight to avoid relegation.
