Youghal GAA club was packed on Saturday evening, 9 March for the launch of the highly anticipated, upcoming hurling match between the Cork and Waterford team members of the past. Waterford will be captained by Dan Shanahan and Cork by, of course, Joe Deane. Rivals in sport come together for the common good as proceeds from match ticket sales will be going to Youghal Cancer Support House.
The idea for this fundraiser came from local Youghal Garda and ex Waterford hurler Peter Queally. Aine Martin, member of the organising committee told The East Cork Journal, “I thought it was a brilliant idea and was more than happy to get involved considering the event and the beneficiary, Youghal Cancer Support House.
Committee Secretary, Kevin Curtin said, “We are delighted with the turnout at tonight’s launch. There is a huge amount of enthusiasm for this fundraiser and this particular charity. It’s heartening to hear that the players are anxious to be involved. We’re delighted to be able to inform people about the Charity Legends match and the upcoming renewal of the rivalry.”
Despite retirement from their infamous inter-county battles, the competitive drives of both team captains is still high. As in matches past no quarter, it is expected, will be asked or given on the day itself! Speaking with The East Cork Journal, Cork Captain for the match, Joe Deane said, “All the players I have been in contact with so far are delighted to have been asked to support such a worthy charity. The players are really looking forward to meeting up again and this will be a great opportunity to reignite the old rivalry between these teams. Players like Sean Óg O hAilpin, Tom Kenny, Brendan Coleman (local club man) and many more are all very eager to take part.”
Not forgetting Waterford of course, Captain Dan Shanahan said, “I was delighted to get the call from Peter Queally and I’m delighted to get this opportunity to support the Youghal Cancer Support Centre. The Waterford players, including Ken McGrath, Tony Browne and Seamus Prendergast are all really looking forward to taking to the pitch once again against this Cork team.”
The Cork v Waterford match will take place at Youghal GAA pitch, Magner’s Hill on Sunday, 5 May at 6pm. Tickets are priced at €10 and will be on sale shortly at local outlets and online. Keep an eye on Youghal GAA Facebook page as details emerge.
As details of a cancer diagnosis for fellow GAA man Kieran O’Connor in Aghada have come to light, the Cork V Waterford match committee have met and announced they will be making a donation from the event to the Friends of Kieran fund. Special souvenir programmes will be on sale at the match for €5, and proceeds from the sale of these will go to help Kieran and his family as he faces a tough battle with a rare cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma.
