Dog Fouling In Midleton Is An Embarrassment Say Angry Residents

By Seamus Whelehan

Tim Hurley and Sheila Hennessey are urging the East Cork Municipality to find ways of tackling the “embarrassing” amount of Dog Foul in their area.
The Midleton residents have said dog mess has become a major problem in the market town with dog walkers failing to pick up after their pets.
While the majority of dog owners are responsible and do pick up after their dog, a small number choose to ignore the rules.
Last Thursday 29 June was particularly bad in the town centre with tourists finding it difficult to avoid the mess on parts of the Main Street.
Both Tim and Sheila are asking the public to paws for thought when taking their pooch for a walk.
The problem has become so widespread it has become a health hazard, they claim.
Cork County Council say they are looking at employing an extra resource in tackling the issue of dog litter in the East Cork area.
The authority are looking at recruiting an extra traffic warden for Midleton and Cobh with responsibility for litter.
The local authority have also looked for powers to increase the litter fine from €150 to €300 and the ability to name and shame those responsible.
At present both the Municipal District and the Tidy Towns issue the public with free dog litter bags in an effort to alleviate the problem.
If you witness a dog fouling offender you can contact the council on 021-4285404/5 with as many details as possible.
Remember the more information you can provide the greater chance there is of offenders being caught.
