Cake Designer of the Year; Baker-Boy-Cakes

The 2018 weddingsonline Awards were held at a special gala event in the City North Hotel Co Meath last week, and there were awards aplenty for East Cork representatives on the night.
Leaders in wedding services gathered at the ninth annual awards ceremony, and there were three East Cork businesses recognised with accolades on the night. There was double delight for the five-star Castlemartyr Resort, as the east Cork venue, which is located on a stunning 220 acre site, picked up both the Hotel Venue of the Year for Munster, as well as the Overall Venue of the Year. In attendance on the evening, to accept the awards, were Wedding and Events Manager Siân James and Sales Manager Aisling McCormick.
Commenting on being awarded the highly sought-after accolades, the newly appointed General Manager, Brendan Comerford, said ‘‘We are absolutely thrilled that Castlemartyr Resort has been awarded not only the ‘Hotel of the Year- Munster’ but the ‘Overall Venue of the Year’ at this year’s awards. I am very proud of the team, particularly Wedding and Events Manager Siân James, Operations Manager Barry Hennessey and Executive Head Chef Kevin Burke who along with their teams have been essential in bringing all the elements of the weddings together at the resort.
‘‘All of the team are so passionate about the resort and the discerning brides and grooms who chose the venue for their wedding, it is fantastic to see that the team’s hard work and commitment have been recognised by the judges. We are so proud to work in such a stunning environment and are honoured to be part of our couples’ wedding journeys at the 5-star resort.’’
Garryvoe Hotel was named Waterside Venue of the Year at the event in Gormanstown. Located alongside the beach in Garryvoe, the local venue played host to in excess of 100 weddings over the past year. It had previously been recognised in the Munster category, between 2015 and 2017, while also picking up the venues co-ordinator award in 2017. This time around, it was the Best National Waterside Wedding Venue accolade. Stephen Belton (MD), Aidan Cotter (GM) and Ben Sharkey (Deputy GM) were among those in attendance to accept the award.
Speaking to the East Cork Journal, Ciara Mitchell, the Sales & Marketing Manager at the Garryvoe Hotel, said; ‘‘it’s the triple crown for us now! We didn’t expect to win it but it’s great for the hotel. Being beside a beach for a wedding is certainly fantastic. It’s all about the location.’’
Meanwhile, the Cake Designer of the Year award went to Baker-Boy-Cakes. The local bakery, run by Brian Roche and family, makes homemade celebration cakes, at their Ballymacoda base, and their wedding pieces have proved to be a big hit.
On receiving the award, Brian told the East Cork Journal; ‘‘I set up Baker Boy Cakes almost 3 years ago now, firstly on a part-time basis and then, after a year, the business had grown so much that I decided to go full-time at it, and gave up my job and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with me specialising in bespoke handcrafted wedding cakes. For me, winning this award is extremely special as it is judged by an independent panel of Judges – all of whom are in the wedding industry. It is recognition of all the long hours and hard work that both I and my family have put in to building Baker Boy Cakes into what it has become today. I couldn't do it without my family’s support and help. This award will help my business grow even further and I'm looking forward to a very busy year ahead.’’
