East Cork Resident Fed Up With Fly Tipping

By Seamus Whelehan

A resident from Garryvoe has claimed the area is being neglected, hitting back at authorities for leaving this illegal waste in situ for almost twelve months.
Sandra Burfield from Ladysbridge Tidy Towns reported an old mattress and toaster among other items discarded near Garryvoe beach last October.
Ms Burfield logged the issue through the Council’s website and contacted the East Cork Journal after the waste remains on site.
The Ladysbridge TidyTowns chairwoman said after recording the incident through the local authority’s online portal she received one notification the case was being investigated and nothing more.
In a statement to the East Cork Journal Cork County Council said while it does not comment on individual litter or illegal dumping detections/ complaints/ investigations, it does all it can to stop fly-tipping and will not hesitate to prosecute those responsible.
They said they “referred the claim that the waste was not cleaned up to the Roads Directorate who received the original report to clarify the particulars of the same.”
Following enquires from the East Cork Journal regarding the case Ms Burfield said she had received further communication stating “it was different rubbish and they had cleared the first lot. Which is hard to disprove.”
“The ideal would be for them [Council] to email you when the status on an active case changes” she said.
