Friends of Midleton Hospital who organise the annual garden fete

It’s a true sign that summer is on its way! The Friends of Midleton Hospital are preparing to hold their annual Garden Fete on the grounds of the 53 bed community hospital next month. The popular Garden Party, a celebration of art, entertainment and community, is this year marking its 28th anniversary on Sunday 7 July.
The event is held to raise funds for the comfort of the Senior Citizens who are cared for by the nursing staff. From 1:30pm to 5:30pm the kind hearted volunteers will continue their hard work when the annual Fete opens on the hospital grounds. Day visitors can browse a myriad of stalls and games, manned by the friends of the Community Hospital. Anyone wishing to donate unwanted gifts, toys and books to sell at the July event is asked to give Maura Milton a call on 087-6934773 ahead of the fete. Music for the 2019 event will be provided by Piper Olan McCarthy, Finnegan’s Gaels, the Bride Valley band with special guests RDC.
Chairperson, Carmel McDonagh paid tribute to the “tremendous” support from the local businesses and community. She made a point of noting that every cent raised locally is spent locally to support the local economy.
Since its establishment in the 1990’s many of the Committee have remained. Last Thursday, however, the large group that gathered for the launch of this year’s Garden Party paid tribute to Mary Woods RIP who acted as Secretary, John McCarthy RIP past Chairman and Donnie Buckley RIP who ran the entrance gate on Fete day, all of whom passed away recently. Monsignor Gould acknowledged the ongoing work of the Friends of Midleton hospital. He said “fundraising is never easy in any shape or form. The most important section of our lives is the last section. Certainly what you do, I have no doubt, makes the lives of the people here in Midleton Hospital a lot easier and a lot more peaceful”
Ward Manager, Aishling O’ Neill, said the Friends are a vital link to helping in the day to day running of the community facility. She said the provision of new TV’s for the elderly has “helped create a more social atmosphere” within the facility and “the addition of overhead hoists has transformed the care of the patients”
“Staff are not pushing and lugging and moving furniture around which, from a dignity point of view,
is absolutely fantastic” said the Ward Manager.
Cllr Noel Collins, outgoing Chairman of the East Cork Municipal District who officiated at the event said “the Friends of Midleton Hospital are a blessing in the town. They keep an eye on the hospital, see the needs, and address them. They don’t turn the deaf ear as is so often done at political level.”
