In Glanmire Macra na Feirme, we pride ourselves in our engagement with the local community and use our strong relationship to raise vital funds for a charity of the clubs choice. This year we decided to raise money for the Dunmanway Oncology Day Unit in CUH.
The Dunmanway Day Unit was created for the use of outpatients, meaning that it allows users of the service to come in get treatment, and ideally go home. The idea of outpatient units like the Dunmanway Day Unit is to allow the users to get their treatment without the need to be admitted for overnight care. The Dunmanway Day Unit therefore provides an excellent service while allowing end users to maintain a level of normality in their lives.
The reality that the majority of us of been impacted by cancer in our lives and as a result we felt that it would be fantastic to raise funds for a local cancer unit. Chairperson Sarah O Connell explains, “as a club we are always looking to positively support our community – when the suggestion came to fundraise for the Dunmanway Unit, we jumped on board. Sadly cancer has impacted on our community so to give back to a fantastic service (like the Dunmanway Unit) is such a great way of supporting those who have been affected by the disease.”
So in December, Glanmire hosted its annual Christmas table Quiz and in doing so raised €2645 for the Dunmanway Day Unit. This week we proudly presented the cheque to Pat McCarthy of the Dunmanway Day Unit. Club Secretary Will Daly said, “that we were delighted to raise so much money for such an incredible service. A massive thank you to club members and the local community for the support”
