Youghal’s Harmony Music and Drama Group will be raising the curtain on their new production “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” by Irish playwright, Martin McDonagh. If the writer’s same sounds familiar it’s because you will have heard it in connection as writer and director of many award winning movies as well as plays. He directed “In Bruges”, the film of his own screenplay, which starred Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson and also wrote and directed the 2017 film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” – amongst many others.
After months of hard work in rehearsals, the play opens Saturday, 23 March in the Mall Arts Centre at 8pm. And runs through to Thursday 28, March. Local director, Finbar Hannon is at the helm of this production with seven cast splitting performances to play the four characters of Mag, Maureen, Ray and Pato. The cast for the first three nights are, Ann Brookes, Terri Fitzgerald, Adam Whelan and Phillip Crowe. Performing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night will be Orla Irwin, Olwyn Dillion, Adam Whelan and Frank Moloney.
Speaking to the East Cork Journal, cast member, Ann Brookes said, “This is a wonderful play and all the cast have thoroughly enjoyed bringing the characters on the page to life. Our director, Finbar Hannon is a pleasure to work with, his knowledge and dedication shine and bring the very best out of everyone. I hope people will enjoy the play as much as I’ve loved being part of it.”
