A Tea Party will be held in the garden of Kennedy’s Bar Killeagh on Saturday, 4 August from 2-5pm. The event is in aid of the Hope Foundation, the charity which works with children living in poverty in the slums of Kolkata in India. Since 2003, the Hope Foundation has been working with students in Secondary and Third Level schools as part of a special Student Immersion Programme. This programme allows for students to fundraise through the year and raise awareness of Hope’s work, then to visit Kolkata and see for themselves the impact of that work on the lives of children in the slums, and the further work that must be done. Hope believes this programme teaches the students the value of life, enhances social and cultural development and gives a life-enhancing experience that few get. The process of raising fund targets, reaching deadlines, using creative thinking, the opportunity to travel and seeing the benefits of humanitarian activity first hand is a unique experience that impacts the lives of all those who volunteer to go to Kolkata.

Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide in Youghal and the Hope Foundation have been partnered for many years and students from the school have travelled to Kolkata during Easter Holidays to see first-hand the work being done by the charity and the positive impact it has on lives of children living in the worst possible conditions. In 2019, 6 students, Éabha Walsh, David Collins, Kate Galvin, Tara Flavin, Eimear Hayes and Niall Sheehan,

having gone through an application and interview process in May this year, will be taking on the challenge and travelling to Kolkata. Speaking with The East Cork Journal, Eabha Walsh said, “I’m really looking forward to visiting Kolkata. It’s a great opportunity to see how other children have to live. We’ve a lot to work to do to raise the funds needed to go and we would really appreciate the support of the public.” Each of the students must now get to work over the next few months fundraising with the help of parents, teachers and friends, starting with the Garden Tea Party in Kennedy’s Bar Killeagh this Saturday, courtesy of Mrs Helen Kennedy.

Please come along and support these altruistic children and the Hope Foundation.
