LE Aishling Goes Under the Hammer For €110,000

By Seamus Whelehan

Mr Dick Van Der Kamp and Auctioneer Dominic Daly seal the purchase of LE Aishling with a handshake.

One of the last naval vessels to be built at Cork Verome Dockyard, Rushbrooke, Cobh went under the hammer at Carrigaline Court hotel last Thursday 23 March.
The LE Aishling was sold at a fraction of the price her sister ships fetched at auction, selling for a mere €110,000 to a Dutch shipping agent.
The LE Emer sold for €320,000 in 2013 with the LE Deirdre going for just over €241,000 in 2001.
Auctioneer Dominic Daly opened the bidding with no reserve but asked for "realistic offers”.
A bid for €100,000 was made then the room fell silent for a lengthy period. Mr Daly took counsel from his clients the Department of Defence outside the door.
