The Ortús Chamber Music Festival 2019 heralds the welcome return to Cork of acclaimed musicians, violinist Mairéad Hickey and cellist Sinéad O’Halloran. Joining them for the 2019 event will be some of this generation’s most sought-after international musicians: on violin, Patrick Rafter from Dublin and celebrated American violinist, William Hagen. Returning to perform in Cork will be some of the stars of the 2018 West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Timothy Ridout (viola) from the UK, and Ella van Poucke (cello) from the Netherlands. Audiences will be delighted to hear that the brilliant Irish pianist, Michael McHale, will also feature in the Ortús 2019 programme. London based Irish clarinettist, Jessie Grimes,  and Clare uilleann piper, Fergal Breen, complete the line-up. With such an incredible opportunity to hear the best of chamber music on our doorstep, Ortús 2019 should not be missed.

This year’s Ortús Chamber Music Festival will take place from the 1st to the 3rd March 2019 and this year Ortús outdoes itself with four different concerts in Cork City, Watergrasshill and Cobh with works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Dvorak, Stravinsky, Dohnanyi and more.

Artistic Director, Mairéad Hickey says that “It is always very special to perform for a Cork audience – and I am excited to bring home such an array of wonderful musicians.”

“It is fantastic to see how our festival has developed over the past four years and I can’t wait to perform such an incredible programme of music alongside such great musicians and friends back home in Cork” says co-Artistic Director Sinéad O’Halloran.

Of special appeal to traditional music lovers, Clare piper Fergal Breen, will join the musicians for Seán Doherty’s ‘No Go’ for uilleann pipes and string quartet.  Elaine Agnew’s ‘I Want to Tell You’ will be featured alongside Olivier Messiaen’s powerful Quartet for the End of Time, composed and premiered at a prisoner of war camp during World War II.

Concerts will be on Friday 1st March at 8pm in University College Cork, on Saturday 2nd March at 2pm in Sirius Arts Centre and at 8pm in First Fruits Arts Centre, Watergrasshill.  On Sunday 3rd March the closing concert is at 3pm in the CIT Cork School of Music.  Tickets are available online at ortusfestival.ie, at Pro Musica, or at the door.

Ortús Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council, RTÉ Supporting the Arts, Cork County Council, Cork City Council and all other supporters and friends.
