Goodbye to 2016
On behalf of the committee I would like to wish each and every member a very Happy New Year and every health and happiness for 2017.
Sadly, some past and present club members passed away during the year. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were bereaved.
We thank all those who supported the club during 2016, in particular our sponsors, team captains, those who helped with the juniors and also those who helped during club tournaments.
It was a very busy and successful year for Lower Aghada Tennis club. I can’t pick one individual highlight but maybe you could chose between witnessing the Munster team retain the Interprovincial title at the club, the fun at the Open Day, the St Vincent de Paul event organised by Kannan, our hugely successful Junior and Senior Opens, the return of some fantastic members to the courts, the pain we strangely enjoyed on Sunday mornings with Michael & Fridays with Fitzy, the success of our players during the Open season, the high levels of sporting participation at all tournaments and of course the fun at club night week on week! The committee really appreciates your continuing support and the positivity the members bring every time they step on court! It makes it all worthwhile.
There was a huge turnout for the Christmas night our in Coppingers on Friday 23rd. It was the most I’ve ever seen for a club night out. Everybody was in flying form and laughed the night away. Looking forward to the next one already!
Annual Table Quiz
The annual table quiz took place on December 29th at the Long Point in Whitegate. Michael O’Brien did a fantastic job as quizmaster, the competition went down to the wire with a tiebreak situation. Well done to all those who took part and a huge thank you to Michael for co-ordinating the event. I’m delighted to say the event raised over 500euro for the local St. Vincent de Paul.
The charity tennis event planned for Sunday Jan 15th has been postponed until February. It will be the same format as the last charity day. Further details will follow, keep an eye on the Facebook page.
The annual Birds tournament will be held from 17th Feb to 12th March so clear your diaries!! It’s such an enjoyable tournament, a great social event to while away the winter months. I’d encourage everybody to participate, it was my first ever tournament and I enjoyed every minute of it. We need players of all grades so put your name in the hat and let the committee do their best to balance the teams!

Over 12 Match Play
Match play for over 12’s recommences on Saturday.
It runs from 12 to 1pm. Games are organised and fully supervised. It’s a brilliant opportunity for our teenage members to have some game practice.
Tennis 10’s is a calendar of events for players participating in their club coaching programmes. It is aimed at players who are looking for an introduction to competition in a friendly environment.
It is very important that all club players support these events as our sport needs more appropriate competition of this nature. Almost all of the events were over subscribed last year and demand is high.
The schedule for the year is available on our Facebook page or if you are interested you can contact Conor O Callaghan, Munster Regional Development Officer directly. He will add you to his circulation lost.
The New Year kick started in style with a great turnout at club night. Thank you to everybody who turned up and in particular to those who sat out for some games. Congratulations to Aine O’Keeffe who was the prizewinner on the night. Thanks to Pat Hanley who once again organised the games.
Club night is held every Wednesday from 7.50pm. It’s 2euro for members and 5euro for non-members.
It’s always a great social night and an opportunity to play with a variety of people.
EVERYBODY is welcome to join us for this lovely weekly social event.
Our Ladies Grade 4 team had a great result today against Ballinlough taking a cool 2 points from some tight matches. They were so unlucky in their last meeting not to come away with points so they are very rightly delighted with this result. Well done to Eileen Bawden, Izabella Trojan, Mary Barnes and Sheila Daly.
Next up are G3 Mens vs Ennis at home next Saturday @ 11am. Ennis have proven to be extremely tough competitors so our home team could do with your support.
G5 Mixed are away against Lakewood next Sunday. Rose, Angela, Michael and Joe hope to continue with the good form the team showed before Christmas.
G6 Ladies captained by Niamh have had a long break but are kicking off the year with some team coaching next weekend. Their next match is against Carrigaline on the 22nd.
