The Make Your Mark art initiative in aid of My Place, Midleton will run next Saturday, 23 September.
Organised by Susan Herlihy of Midleton’s Crafty Hands Ceramic Studio and hosted at My Place, Midleton, the Mark Your Mark event will this year run as a single-day event from 11am-1pm. For a small donation to My Place, people of all ages from East Cork and beyond are invited to design their own tile, which will be will be installed in a wall in My Place as a permanent art fixture alongside the other tiles previously created by fellow members of the community.
The Make Your Mark tile initiative can trace its origins back to the Midleton Arts Festival in 2014, where it began as a community arts project. Previously the initiative was run on an ongoing basis with the community invited into the Crafty Hands Ceramic Studio to design a tile.
“Before it was ongoing thing with people arriving in drips and drabs into my studio,” said Susan Herlihy, proprietor of Crafty Hands and one of the initiative’s organisers. “This year will be a little bit different. We want to get everybody together in the My Place hall, to have everybody on-site at the one time, as the whole point is to make it a community event.”
The Make Your Mark event is open to everyone. All proceeds will go to My Place, which consists of a dedicated youth space, a drop-in centre incorporating a youth café, recreation area, music room and arts space, and also provides many additional services to the Midleton community in general.
“We have a number of tiles up already,” said Ms Herlihy, “and not just from locals. We have had Swedes, Germans and other visitors to our community take part. Make Your Mark is for everybody, and all the proceeds go to My Place because it is very important for us to support the youth in our area. My own nieces and nephews have tiles up. It is nice to think that when they are older and are using My Place, they can look at the wall and see that they’ve made their mark.”
