Four Harvey Norman staff members on Cork will walk from the city to Waterford city in a 70 mile trek later this month.
During the month of February, Harvey Norman are holding various fundraising initiatives for 'The Peter McVerry Trust'. This charity focusses on reducing homelessness and the harm caused by drug misuse and social disadvantage. The aim of the fundraising campaign is to fit out 20 new homes, to house homeless people in, around Ireland.
On February 20th and 21st, Stephen Roe (19, Midleton), Ryan O' Neill (25, Midleton), Aaron Murphy (23, Midleton), and Sam Fitzgibbon (20, Carrigaline) will undertake an epic walk, starting from the Kinsale Road store, and journeying to to the Harvey Norman store in Waterford, in an effort to raise funds for the chosen charity.
The quartet are going to complete this trek over two full days (Feb 20 & 21) all while carrying their clothes, tent and equipment. It’s expected that the total distance covered will be approx. 74 miles – the equivalent of almost three marathons. The four will camp out overnight, as they aim to create an experience similar to what Ireland’s homeless encounter day-in, day-out.
Stephen Roe, one of the four members set to undertake the endurance challenge, told the East Cork Journal; ‘‘we thought that we may as well do something that is physically challenging. We said ‘why not walk to another store’? Little Island was a bit too close! So, we chose Waterford. It’s going to be very tough! Depending on which route we go, it’s going to be around 74 miles – which is pretty crazy! We’re hoping the weather will be kind, as we’ll be camping out. As regards passing the time, we’ll just have a good chat I’d say.
‘‘I have done some physical challenges before, and volunteered abroad in the Philippines and in Lourdes. We want to make a difference. We decided to do something like this and we want to make it a far distance so that we would be staying out at night, to experience as the homeless live, and get across that message, to show how tough it is.’’
A GoFundMe account has been established by the four Harvey Norman staff members, to which any interested parties can donate. The goal is €1,000, with 100% of funds going directly to the Peter Mc Verry Trust.
