East Cork Rapid Response were presented with a cheque for €500 by the Midleton and District Vintners Association this past Tuesday, 8 August.
The cheque presentation took place at Harty’s Bar and saw representatives from the ECRR, paramedic Fergal Mullaney, Midleton garda Eoghan Healy and ECRR’s Secretary Carrie O’Donoghue accept the donation from two members of Midleton and District Vintners Association, Batt Murphy and AnneMarie Kennedy.
ECRR provides emergency pre-hospital care on par with ambulances and as such its Critical Care Doctor generally responds to more serious cases. So far this year the types of incidents ECCR responded included cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions (RTCs), serious falls from height, life threatening infections, severe breathing difficulties, strokes and heart attacks, and serious illnesses and injuries involving paediatric patients.
This past bank holiday weekend saw ECRR respond to four emergency medical incidents, including two cardiac arrests and one respiratory arrest. ECRR worked with the National Ambulance Service and community first responder groups during these calls. A single callout for ECRR can cost between €700-800 in the equipment used in life-saving efforts. The four callouts this past weekend could be estimated to cost up to €3,200.
Within the first six months of 2017 ECRR has attended 65 emergency medical incidents, putting the group on track to meet their average amount of yearly callouts which is 120-140.
East Cork Rapid Response is run on a voluntary basis, with the medical equipment and maintenance for the response car funded by public donations, and all personnel working without pay.
