This New Year’s Day parents, children and teachers from Midleton Educate Together National School will be dipping their toe into the icy waters at Garryvoe Beach to raise funds for the school.
Joanna Morrissey, Midleton Educate Together Parents’ Association said: “We have a swim most Christmas Days but because the weather on Christmas Day in the past has been very bad and we have been forced to cancel or rearrange the swim, this year we decided to go for New Year’s Day.”
She added: “It will be a nice way to start the year and a good cleanse for us all too.”
Swimmers will meet at Garryvoe Beach on 1 January at 12pm and tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be served.
The school are currently in the process of getting a new school building and funds raised will help to resource the school.
Mrs Morrissey said: “We are in the process of raising as much of the funds as possible to help with the resourcing of the new school. There is always something that needs to be fundraised for in a new building.”
At past swims only parents had been involved in the day, however this year some of the children have also volunteered to help out.
“Previous years only parents have been involved. Last year all the dads dressed up as superheroes. That was great but this year, some of the children really wanted to get involved from Muinteoir Darragh's 1st class so a couple of the kids will be there on the day too,” Mrs Morrissey explained.
Swimmers have sponsorship cards and donations can also be made through the group’s iFundraise page.
Mrs Morrissey said: “A big thank you to all of our parents who got involved. We are very lucky to have such supportive parents in the school who always come out and get involved. Thank you to everyone who is helping out on the day.”
