The junior section of the Midleton Concert Band came back from their first National Band Championships with three awards; best woodwind section, most promising band and the third place overall. It was an early start on Saturday 8th as the band of 31 young musicians travelled to the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands (IABCB) national competition in Navan. Of the nine competing bands in their section they were the youngest in age, most of them still in primary school. Some of them took up the instruments only two years ago.
They played three pieces, a rousing” Military March “ (Beethoven ), followed by a softer “A Song for Friends” (Daehn) and closing with a warm “Celtic Air and Dance” (Sweeney),
The adjudicator, Mr Archie Hutchinson, was clearly impressed with the band’s tunefulness and balance, and how they handled the dynamics and the more sensitive parts of the pieces.
