St Mary’s High School in Midleton played their part in the Irish Heart Foundations Happy Heart appeal last Friday.
The big hearted volunteers took to the Main Street to sell the €3 happy Orla Kiely designed heart pins as they took time out of their transition year programme.
Every day 27 lives are lost to heart disease and stroke in Ireland with 300 cases diagnosed daily.
The Irish heart foundation says 80% of these cases are preventable.
According to the latest research the proportion of strokes among people of working age in Ireland has soared by over a quarter in just the last seven years.
The results have prompted calls for significant new investment in prevention programmes, along with health and community care services to cater for younger stroke survivors.
