Relay for Life Midleton held a coffee morning for cancer survivors at My Place, Midleton last Saturday, 10 June, with new survivors registering for this year’s Relay event in August.
The coffee morning provided an opportunity for survivors who would like to become involved with this year’s relay to have their questions answered and to sign up.
“We got a few new survivors so that of course was a good thing,” said Elaine Duggan, Public Relations Officer for Relay for Life Midleton. “Any amount of survivors we can help out is great. Survivors can still get in touch with us by Facebook or email and we will take entries right up until and even on the day of the Relay.”
Relay for Life Midleton will hold more survivor-orientated events before the Relay on 26 August, but the next event will be a team captains’ meeting.
“On Thursday, 22 June we will have a team captains’ meeting,” said Ms Duggan. “It will be held from 8pm at the Midleton Park Hotel and it is for all the team captains to come along so we can sort out the logistics for the Relay such as what’s expected of the teams, if they need tents, if those tents need electricity on the night and so on. But it is not just for the captains; people can come along on the night and ask questions or sign up.”
Midleton Relay for Life is a 24 hour team-based walking relay which raises money for the Irish Cancer Society and will be held at the CBS Secondary School in Midleton for the second year running. Each team comprises between 10-15 members with at least one member required to remain walking the course at all times, however teams are not mandatory and neither is attending the event for the full runtime.
“We would like to thank Hurley’s Supervalu and My Place, Midleton for all their help in getting the coffee morning set up and running. We got the supplies from Supervalu and My Place gave us the room to hold the coffee morning. We’d also like to point out that if anybody or any business wishes to sponsor us, either monetarily or through spot prizes or food for the night they can contact us by Facebook or email.”
