An elderly Midleton woman, whose only mode of transport was stolen just two weeks before Christmas, has thanked the public after its safe return.
Long-time political and community activist, Kathleen Woulfe, relies heavily on her bicycle saying it keeps her independent.
Mrs Woulfe had her pushbike taken from outside her home on Station Road on Wednesday night, 11 December or into the early hours of Thursday morning 12 December.
The 83 year old discovered that the bike, with two black baskets, (one in front, one behind) was missing when she went to do her daily shop.
The theft was reported to Gardaí but the pensioner was not holding out much hope of its return.
Through the powers of social media a post on the East Cork Journal’s Facebook page, which was shared dozens of times, resulted in the bicycle being returned last Friday.
Mrs Woulfe travels every day by bike, pedalling the 1km into Midleton Centre.
The robbery of the bike had taken the popular Senior Citizen’s independence and quality of life, having to rely on friends and neighbours for transport, or otherwise remain housebound.
Last month Senior Garda Management in Cork County reported a 200% increase in bicycle thefts in the Cork North policing division.
Figures released by the Force show that in the ten month period January to October 2019, 42 incidents had been reported, compared to 14 in the previous year.
