The new CD collection of traditional songs from the greater East Cork area, was finally launched in Cobh last Friday 16 March. This important collection of songs dating from the early 1600’s up to the 20th century, was put together by the Gleanntán Gaeilge Bheo group, with grant aid from Dun Laoi Teo, and The Arts department of the Cork County Council. Featuring well know singers such as Karan Casey, John Spillane, and Jimmy Crowley, as well as award winning artists such as Maire ní Cheallachair, Nell Ní Chroinín, Cór Fear na nDéise, and Ciarán O Geallbháin, the launch of this high quality musical collection marks the end of 7 years of research and recording by the Gleanntán group. Do b’é Diarmaid Ó Conail agus Fergus O Súilleabháin a rinne an cuid is mó den taighde, le cabhair ó Roinn na Gaeilge san Ollscoil i gCorcaigh.
Micheál Ó Cuimín, locally based Midleton Architect and musician, was tasked with putting together the artists, arranging of the music, and the recording of the entire collection. Thug ceoltóirí áitiúla an-chabhair go deo, chun an ceol atá ar an dlúthdhiosca a chur le chéile. Ina measc siúd, bhí John Cronin, Imelda McCarthy, Cliona Halley, Abby Ní Loinsigh, Pa O Shea, Jimmy Morrison, Joanne Quirke, Muireann Ní Dhonnabháin, Mick Buckley agus Paddy Forde.
One song, in particular was discovered, deep in the archives of the Royal Irish Academy, and which was recorded in 1928, as part of a Folklore project at that time. That project made recordings of voices in the Gaelic language, in each of the Gaeltacht areas of Ireland at that time, and this included the Knockadoon/Ballymacoda Gaeltacht area. The title song of this CD, “Posadh an Phaoraigh” was taken from that collection, and was sung by local Knockadoon fisherman and shopkeeper, Seamus Breathnach. Tugann an t-amhrán sin, sampla deas duinn, den Gaeilge a bhí á úsáid ag daoine as Oirther Chorcaí ag an am sin.
Is féidir a rá, go bhfuil an bailiúcháin seo san chatagóir chéanna, mar go bhfuil cnuasach breá cheoil, scríobhtha in Oirthear Chorcaí, caomhnaithe don chéad ghlúin eile. It is intended that proceeds from the CD sales will assist the local Gaelscoileanna and also Midleton Community Hospital in their fundraising.
