Midleton Rugby Club welcomed back a Ballinacurra native at a ceremony this past Tuesday, 18 April.
John West, the esteemed international rugby referee, returned to Midleton to present a trophy to representatives of Midleton RFC in the Midleton Park Hotel. The trophy, which is silver and Kilkenny marble, was donated by Mr West and will be held at the clubhouse as a perpetual trophy awarded to the Adult Player of the Year.
“John’s father was previously the headmaster in Midleton College,” said Anne Cunningham, Public Relations Officer for Midleton Rugby Football Club. “His family home was in Ballinacurra so he has strong ties to Midleton. He is a famous international referee, kind of the Nigel Owens of his day. He is a good, lovely man and he was a good referee too. He really stood his ground in contentious situations.”
