Shining a Light on Homelessness

By Seamus Whelehan

1A Cork based Charity is hosting a sleep out to shine a light on homelessness across the country.
The rate of homelessness in Cork is increasing at an alarming rate, with 407 currently without a home. Nationally there are 10,305 homeless, of which 1,733 are families.
Focus Ireland are looking for East Cork business leaders and their employees to take part in this year’s Shine a Light Campaign.
The initiative, in its 8th year, encourages people to sleep outside and experience what it is like to be homeless.
It aims to show the struggles faced when sleeping rough, and raise funds while sleeping under the stars.
€4 million has been raised by Shine a Light since 2012.
Last year the Charity helped support 15,500 people who were either homeless or at risk of losing their home.
This year’s Business Leader Sleep Out event takes place on Spike Island on Friday 18th October, with company employees encouraged to sleep in, or sleep out, at their work place on the same evening.
John Crotty, Spike Island Development Company Manager said “its historic venue puts the modern crisis of homelessness in clear focus.”
