The Transition Year students of St. Aloysius’ College, Carrigtwohill bring the Broadway Musical Classic “Annie” to the stage next month with a panache and flair that has come to be associated with East Cork’s brightest and best!
Annie, a plucky orphan girl is on a determined mission to find her parents in 1930s New York, having been abandoned as a baby on the doorstep of a dilapidated orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. With the support of the other girls in the orphanage, Annie escapes and experiences adventure in The Big Apple, along the way making friends with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, Franklin D. Roosevelt and a lovable dog.
Adventure and magic follow, as Annie transforms all those around her with her positive attitude and her ‘never say never’ approach to life. With the help of her delightful fellow orphans, she foils Miss Hannigan’s evil scheming and discovers the true meaning of family. Musical highlights include “Tomorrow”, “Easy Street”, “N.Y.C.” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile”. There are even a few unexpected surprises thrown in along Annie’s journey of adventure which are sure to thrill audience members of all ages!
This musical brings us back to think about what is important in our lives – love, hope, optimism and a good old fashioned musical to make us laugh out loud and enjoy life. Laughs will be delivered aplenty as Annie finds her way into your heart with her mischievous sense of adventure and a true spirit of optimism. Modern themes of resilience in the face of adversity and the undeniable importance of positivity, triumph in this show; teaching the cast and audience alike a great lesson in facing our own daily toils and troubles. You are sure to “forget about your worries and your sorrows” as the St. Al’s girls’ talents shine and sparkle from the stage. Annie has become an honorary St. Al’s girl as our TY’s have grown to know her through their experiences in staging this show and her determination is equaled by that of our girls in their commitment to excel in this production for you, their audience.
Our director, Ms. Anne Marie Scully had this to say about the current show experience:
“It has been an absolute pleasure working with such talented and energetic young ladies. Their enthusiasm, commitment and positivity is infectious. I can think of no more appropriate show to direct for this particular group - they epitomise the spirit of this universally loved show. We are thoroughly looking forward to staging Annie in February and hope to see you there”.
