Suicide Awareness Training in Cobh and Midleton

Cobh Community Centre and Midleton Family Resource Centre will host free SafeTalk training programmes, facilitated by the Cobh “Breaking the Silence” group, on Thursday, 6 December at 7pm and Wednesday, 12 December at 6.30pm on both evenings. The programme, lasting 3 hours, approaches suicide alertness training from two main avenues. The first is to provide the educational tools and skillset through suicide first aid resources to increase the ability and confidence of participants to be of assistance in the immediate safety of someone who is at risk of suicide. Secondly it teaches people how to recognise the signs and identify people with suicidal thoughts, and enables them provide information for further, more long-term help for those in crisis. It hopes, by these means, to help reduce the risk of suicide in local communities.
Speaking with The East Cork Journal, John Mansworth (Chairperson of Breaking the Silence voluntary group) said, “We are a group of 5 volunteers and have been facilitating SafeTalk courses and the follow-up Assist courses for 10 years. Before the end of the year, we will have reached a figure of 10,000 people trained in one or both of the programmes. In 2017, we provided 12% of all Safe Talk and Assist training nationwide. I would encourage anyone, especially parents, to sign up for the programme. This short course could, in time, make all the difference to your family or one close to you.”
Seán Ahern (Co-ordinator at Midleton Family Resource Centre) said “The programme has received huge response and is already three-quarters full. I’ve no doubt the target number of 30 per course will be reached. The programme is open to all, the only criterion for participants being that they have not been bereaved by suicide in the last 6 months.”
According to the Central Statistics Office, there were 45 reported suicides in Cork County in 2015. In 2016, that figure was 46. The provisional figure released for 2017 was 47 reported suicides.
