Michael Emberley renowned Illustrator completed his mural Miss Brooks loves Books, but I don’t at Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann as part of the schools Big Picture Project .

Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann was delighted to welcome to the school recently, Michael Emberley, the final Illustrator of the Big Picture Project. In February the school welcomed Laureate na nÓg, P.J. Lynch who was joined by a team of Ireland’s top Illustrators-Niamh Sharkey, Lauren O Neill, Marie -Louise Fitzpatrick and Chris Judge . The children enjoyed a workshop –Monster Doodle, led by the Illustrators. The children created a series of technicolour monster doodles on giant rolls of paper laid out in the Halla. Over the weekend the Illustrators transformed blank walls into creative, colourful, reflective spaces. Each mural is different and magical, and each tells a story. They bring great joy to staff and children alike as they pass by the murals daily. They certainly ignite the imagination.
It has been wonderful to watch the process which Michael worked during the school day. We saw the mural evolve from the page to the wall, from pencil outlines to the wonderful palette of colours used. Michael chatted to the children as they passed and was happy to answers all questions. His mural is from” Miss Brooks loves Books, but I don’t! , a book which he illustrated. It tells the story of a reluctant reader who finally finds a book she loves. It is a wonderful, bright, fun mural.
Michael Emberley was accompanied by his wife Marie–Louise Fitzpatrick, author and illustrator of “The Long March” a much loved book which recounts the story of how the Choctaw Tribe came to donate to the plight of the Irish during the Famine. A wonderful gift, generously given by a people who had suffered their own tragedy, in the 1830s. Marie –Louise addressed the senior classes and explained how she researched “The Long March” over a 5 year time span. It was a fascinating and highly informative presentation. She spoke of her travels to the U.S and her time spent with the Choctaw Tribe. Jack Foley 6th class, presented a wonderful photo, taken by Andrew Foley, of “Kindred Spirits” locally known as the Feathers, to Marie –Louise.
Míle Buíochas Michael Emberley and Marie–Louise Fitzpatrick. You both bring books to life - magic !
