Upper Glanmire Set for Paddy’s Day Festivities

By Claire O'Donoghue

The first winner headlining the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Upper Glanmire as it sets off at 3pm from the Sports Hall this year, will be Donal O'Connell. Donal was the winner of the Over 60's Talent Competition this year and he has been given pride of place at this year's festivities with the title of Parade Grand Marshal.

Far from being alone in his winning status, Donal will be joined by the winners of the Junior All-Ireland Football Championship the Glanmire Ladies Football Team, and also by White's Cross Junior B Hurling team who are winners of the club's first County title.

The event promises to be a great family day loaded with craic agus ceol and followed by what the Irish do better than anyone- a party- which will take place in the Sports Hall.

Entries for the Upper Glanmire Parade (which Neil Prendeville, from listener feedback, described on his show as “Cork's Best Kept Secret”) include Pipers from The Cork City Fire Brigade Pipe Band, local business and association floats, a variety of vintage vehicles and much more.

At the party in the Sports Hall afterwards, a fun filled family day is on the cards to celebrate our National day.  There will be Irish music and dancing, bouncy castles, sumo wrestling, and even a rodeo bull! Plenty of refreshments will be on offer to keep toes in tapping form.

Speaking with Rob Kenny from the Upper Glanmire Community Committee, he said, “Barry's Coaches will be sponsoring a park and ride from supervised car parks in White's Cross and Brian Dillon's GAA pitch. Alan Loftus Transport are sponsoring the review stand where local lady, Shin Hayes, will be acting as MC. We welcome all schools, clubs, groups and sporting teams to enter the Parade free of charge. We'd like to thank all our sponsors, the large group pf volunteers and organisers that bring about a wonderful day like this, the Gardaí and the local Glanmire St. John’s Ambulance and all the participants.”
