It was a wonderful achievement for all involved with the awarding of the Blue Flag status for Redbarn in Youghal, the only beach throughout the East Cork coastline to receive such an accolade. On Thursday last, 25th May the Flag was presented at the Quality Hotel, and the Youghal representation included local Cllr Mary Lenihan Foley, deputising for County Mayor Seamus McGrath, Paul Murray Executive Engineer, Helen Mulcahy, Michael Lee, Youghal Coastguard, Jerry Walsh of Youghal Lifeboat Station.
Speaking with The East Cork Journal on the day, Margaret O'Mahony, Staff Officer, Cork County Council said the Blue Flag is a significant achievement for Youghal and should boost tourism and visitors to the town.
East Cork community groups were represented by Mike Walsh and John O' Brien of Ballymacoda Ladysbridge Community Council, and Prionsias O'Tuama who is involved in Ardnahinch/Shanagarry, which got a Green Coast Award.
East Cork Council staff at the event included Joe McCarthy Municipal District Officer, Dave Clarke Senior Executive Engineer, Connie Foley District Supervisor, Sean O Callaghan Senior Executive Officer East Cork & Cobh Municipal Districts.
Well done to everyone involved in this great accomplishment.
