On Saturday 27th July at Claycastle from 3-6pm, the second Youghal Pride will hit the beach from 3-6pm with a wealth of activities and fun to be had! Supported by Cork Pride, this event celebrates the positive self-identity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender fluid people of this area. It’s an opportunity for family, friends and neighbours to show their support for equality and inclusion, while having fun in the sun.

The flags will be flying as you walk down to the beach – either from the Front Strand or car parking is available at Claycastle Beach.

At 3pm, the LinC drummers, based at the les/bi women’s centre in Cork city, will drum us into the day and there will be information stands in our marquee from LinC, Cork Gay Project, Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) and Cumann na Daoine / Youghal LGBT Network. You can buy your rainbow ribbons and badges here too!

Throughout the event there will be beach games for children and adults: sandcastle competition; wellie-throwing contest, races, face painting and a penalty shoot-out!

Local DJ Ger Ronayne will be spinning the tunes for us to dance on the sands, and at 3.30pm we have a special best-costume competition ‘Visibly Proud’, hosted by Ms Gay Ireland Stephanie Fogarty (aka drag king Will A Blige) and drag king Dez Scrace. We know how important dress can be for identity and we want to give you the space to be as loud and proud as you want. Come head to toe in drag or just wear your favourite button up shirt, this moment is all about you. Sign up on the day and we can’t wait to see you all there looking and feeling your best!

Games and disco will continue until 4.30pm when Cork duo, “Sparkle” will treat us to their powerful singing – let’s dance the afternoon away!

On the day there will be a raffle, fundraising, as with ribbons and badges, for next year’s Youghal Pride! The raffle will be drawn at 5.45pm before we close our event with a singalong of Over the Rainbow.

Food and soft drinks are available from the beach’s own stand: stewards will be available throughout the event if you need assistance, and the beach has a concrete ramp to help with access to the activities.

Pride is an international movement that marks the beginnings of the Gay Liberation movement after the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York. Across Ireland, Prides big and small honour and acknowledge the role of those LGBT people who started the fight for equality and inclusion. Please join us in celebration and acknowledge, not only LGBT+ people living in Youghal today, but those LGBT+ people whose lives were held in secrecy, who struggled for recognition, and who helped Ireland become the inclusive society it is today.

Youghal Pride by the Sea was welcomed by the Municipal Council on 23rd July, when the rainbow flag was raised outside the Civic Offices. This is a welcome recognition of the vital role that LGBT+ people play in the life of the town, and acknowledges the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender-fluid people of this region. The rainbow flag was raised by Cllr. Mary Linehan-Foley and will fly for the week of Youghal Pride.

Youghal Library is presenting an exhibition from the Cork LGBT History Archives to support Youghal Pride: this will be launched in Friday 26th at 4pm in the Library in The Rivergate Mall, and will run until Saturday 27th July. This is a short run, but the exhibition will be back in September for a longer stay alongside other LGBT-positive events which the Library is planning. To complete our celebrations this weekend, the Regal Cinema is hosting a matinee screening on Sunday 28th at 11am. The film is ‘Pride’: a heartwarming story of the support given to the striking miners by London’s LGBT community. Tickets are only €5 (and prosecco mimosas for €5 too!)

It’s inspiring to see so many town businesses and groups supporting Youghal Pride: demonstrating the town’s keen sense of inclusion and the welcome it gives to all its people. Be proud, and join us on the 27th at Claycastle Beach!

Youghal Pride is funded by Cork County Council through Cork Pride, and by Cork County Council’s Community Heritage Fund. Thanks to all our sponsors who have donated prizes, and to all the local organisations who’ve been involved in planning the event, particularly Youghal Community Health Project and Youghal Lifeguards.
