Cian O'Brien with his Munster under 23 High Jump and Long Jump Gold Medals.

Cian O’Brien from Youghal made a fantastic return to competitive action last weekend, by taking double gold at the Munster Indoor Championships.
The 19 year old won the top prize in both the Indoor High Jump and Long Jump, at the competition in Nenagh. Cian claimed a winning distance of 5.47 metres in the Long Jump and reached a height of 1.75 metres in the High Jump – impressive results considering this was his first competitive action in twelve months.
Speaking to the East Cork Journal, the Waterford AC athlete said; ‘‘I was injured for the last year with an ankle injury, after doing the long jump this time last year, at the Munster’s. It’s an amazing feeling to come back after a year of not competing and to be able to win. It’s brilliant.’’
Currently on a scholarship programme at WIT in Waterford, Cian has been training hard, alongside several really experienced athletes. He has also been sprinting, in a bid to get into peak condition for the year ahead.
‘‘I’m in my first year at WIT. They have a great set-up down there. The training there is amazing – it has helped to get me to where I am now. I am sprinting with the college team to get fit. It’s hard and it is challenging. But, I’m enjoying every minute of it,’’ Cian said.
The All-Ireland’s are now fast-approaching, with Cian aiming to add to his medal tally, in Athlone, in three weeks’ time.
