A face familiar to many, East Cork Rocker Barry Darcy, has been announced as Grand Marshal for this weekend’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Youghal. Earlier this month the father of two received the Ireland’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer from pop impresario Louis Walsh, in a tear jerking audition which sent him straight into the semi-final. The real life Iron Man won over Louis with his rendition of the Elvis Presley classic “The Wonder of You”
In 2013 Barry was told he may never walk again after a herniated disc crushed the main nerve feeding the nerves in his legs. The Castlemartyr man defied doctors who said he may never walk again by focusing on his rehabilitation, vowing to prove them wrong. When Barry was asked to be Grand Marshal for the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Youghal, the Ireland’s Got Talent Semi-finalist thought “it was a joke”, but he was “delighted with the honour” to lead the event. In selecting Barry as Grand Marshal Helen Heaphy Grainge, Secretary of Youghal4All said “we believe in showcasing the talent we have in East Cork. We believe in helping our own and promoting home-grown talent.”
Themed “Youghal Welcomes Ironman” the 2019 Patrick’s Day Parade has the largest number of businesses, groups and organisations participating in the event. Helen Heaphy Grainge says this year’s Parade is shaping up to be “the biggest and best” which the harbour town has ever seen.
The Parade will start at 3:00pm sharp and will proceed along Brehon road to Catherine Street, Grattan Street, then on towards the Mall and Strand Street, before returning to Dolphin Square via Friar Street, South Main Street and North Main Street.
Prizes for Best Float, Best Banner, Best Marching Group, Best Juvenile Group, Best Culture Group, Best Club Display, Best Business Display, and Best Newcomer will be announced on the day.
