Paddy (seated!) celebrates his retirement after 51 years in Youghal Post Office

Paddy Hourigan was fourteen years old when he started work in the 'new' Youghal Post Office in 1965. This week Paddy retired after fifty one years with the same employer!
In a quick interview with The East Cork Journal Paddy, who was surrounded by family, friends and colleagues at his retirement celebrations, said "I was taken on as a Telegraph Boy the same year that the new Post Office opened, but I never thought I would still be there 51 years later! I was eventually promoted to Postman", he said, "and I loved every minute of it. In those days', Paddy continued," we didn't have anything like we have nowadays, and one of my memories is being overjoyed when I got a Honda 50 'Chicken Chaser'. I travelled hundreds of miles on that bike", he said, "and it made my life much easier!"
Paddy Hourigan loved his job. He knew everyone, everyone knew him, and he loved meeting the people and checking on the elderly during his rounds. He hated the rain!
Paddy has three sons, Martin, Declan and Paul who lives locally with his wife Eleanor and their sons Martin and Declan, Paddy's Grandsons.
We wish Paddy a very long and happy retirement.
