Youghal’s Young at Heart Celebrate in Style with YARA

By Denise Fitzgerald

It must be the biggest success story ever!   In April of this year YARA, Youghal Active Retirement Association was founded by Phyllis Foley, Frank and Gráinne Down who got together, formed the Group, and put a huge amount of work, thought, and diligence into perfecting it.  Today, just 8 months later the number of members, both men and women, has grown to upwards of 110 and this number is growing by the week.  The programme of events includes a different activity for every single week day, Monday to Friday, and members can participate in all, or just those which appeal to them.  Most importantly, it is fun!

On Thursday last over 70 enthusiastic members wined and dined together at the Christmas Lunch in the Walter Raleigh Hotel, enjoying a superb meal, live music, singing and the occasional impromptu jig!!  The chat never stopped as the spritely members enjoyed the company of new friends they had made, and catching up with others.

Speaking with The East Cork Journal several of the Partygoers said that YARA has changed their lives.  Having the option every day of doing a different activity with people of their own age has eliminated any laziness or, indeed, loneliness for many members.  They now have the opportunity to get together with people of their own age group, try out new activities, get fitter, go to the cinema, have coffee mornings in local cafes and restaurants, and especially meet and chat with others, all thanks to three very special people - Frank, Grainne and Phyllis.

Membership is always open so why not pop along to Cumann na Daoine on a Wednesday afternoon at 3.30pm and see for yourself what it’s all about. You won’t regret it.

Yara Go on! Go on! Go on!
